The days of embracing soda are gone. Society was in a Coke vs. Pepsi war in the eighties. We evolved to bigger drinks with more sugar and more caffeine as time went on. Now, armed with better technology and more comprehensive research, we know better.  Vending machines are serving drinks that cater to our waistlines and brain health. Drinks  combined with fruit and coconut water, or berry-flavored water infused with omega-3 fatty acids and other nutrients are more and more available.

Teas are also taking over.  Flavors like broccoli cilantro tea are gaining recognition daily because of their multi-health benefit impact. Sure, hot tea isn’t always readily available for our on-the-go lifestyle, but if you can grab a hot or cold tea while out and about – do it. Teas are a great alternative to sugary sodas and help your body and brain in many ways. Green tea, opposed to broccoli cilantro tea, is a popular drink at most coffee houses.  This tea helps reduce the  risk of osteoporosis, cancer, heart disease, and cavities. Green tea contains a rich concentration of flavonoids and polyphenols. These are antioxidants that may protect cells from cancer-causing substances and inhibit tumor growth. The tea’s antioxidants may also guard against heart disease by relaxing blood vessels, inhibiting the formation of blood clots that trigger heart attacks and strokes in the brain.

If you often find yourself at the vending machine opting for a diet soda, think again. Go with coconut water (freezing it at home the night before makes it extra delicious) or  a regular water with lemon.  If you are at a coffee house avoid the high-calorie blended drinks. These will not benefit your waist line or your brain. Instead, grab a hot or cold green tea (or any tea really) to benefit your body and brain.

There are many alternatives to soda or coffee drinks that will benefit your overall health. Remember, exercise is also important.   We here at Odom Health & Wellness can develop a complete health plan (from working out and diet to physical therapy and yoga) that works alongside your schedule and within your budget!
