Common myths surrounding physical therapy!

by | Mar 4, 2014 | Physical Therapy, Sports Medicine

Believe it or not there are some people who think there really is no benefit to participating in physical therapy services. They believe some common myths associated with physical therapy (PT). Well, we here at Odom Health & Wellness are going to debunk these myths on today’s blog.

Myth # 1.  Physical therapy is nothing more than exercise that can be done alone or with a personal trainer at a cheaper cost.  NO! This is wrong. Exercises only form part of the treatment and recovery process and are given to patients in addition to any necessary hands on treatment specific to their condition.

Myth # 2.  It’s painful. Again, as previously discussed on our social media accounts, it is NOT painful most of the time. Physical therapist do their best to avoid causing patients further discomfort. While yes, sometimes there is associated pain, it is not always the case.

Myth #3.  Physical therapy is only for sports people. Wrong again. Many people benefit from physical therapy. The elderly, people with multiple sclerosis, people who sprained or broke body parts, and more benefit for PT services.
